Wellness for Cancer

Gaia Spa Boringdon launched in 2016 and at the time it was the first spa to open having already trained its team in wellness for cancer treatments. Wellness for Cancer is a charity created to facilitate self care and better lifestyle choices for individuals who have been touched by cancer. The charity also trains spas and wellness centers on how to provide personalised wellness services to individuals touched by cancer, recognizing the need for wellness for everyone. The organization is creating a global movement anchored in evidence-based integrative therapies including: mindfulness, meditation, yoga, massage, skin health and beauty.

Founder Diane Nettelton says, ‘At Gaia spa it is all about giving all our guests a great experience and as 1 in 2 people will have some experience in cancer it is vital for us that our therapist during consultation can decide on the best experience for our guests. Much of the training is about technique and being aware of exit sites, lymphatic drainage and any parts that have had recent surgery. We don’t believe that cancer is a skin type and care for all our guests whatever their circumstances. We work closely with our local hospital subsiding spa days for the primrose trust (breast cancer care), paediatric oncology by caring for parents of patients and the Mustard Tree centre the oncology unit where we offer 2 spa days a month free of charge with lunch, use of the facilities and a spa treatment because due to personal experience I am aware of the financial implications as well as the emotional implications that going through cancer means. It is important to create a space outside of the hospital for our guests to relax in our beautiful surroundings overlooking Dartmoor even if that means just sitting looking at the view. It is also important to create memories and have special occasions together. There are so many reasons guests come to a spa and you have to be able to meet all those expectations.’

Gaia Spa at Boringdon is currently the Best Hotel Spa Western Europe and Scandinavia as awarded by the world spa and wellness awards and also Best Destination UK Spa as voted be Condé Nast.
