Hair Stylist Lauren gives her tips for optimum summer hair health...

Whilst summer is full of wonderful fun in the sun, it can be the most damaging for our hair. Long days basking in the sunlight and dips in the pool or ocean can dry out our hair and make it dull and lifeless. Our hair stylist Lauren gives her tips for optimum summer hair health...

Reduce the heat…

The hair is already exposed to a significant amount of heat in the summer and will probably air-dry quickly. Try to blow-dry your hair as little as possible. Avoid hair straighteners too as they will only further damage already dry hair.

Hot Oils…

Avocado, olive and coconut oils are good at penetrating the hair shaft. Shampoo hair as normal and then work in oil from ends to roots. Rinse then condition as usual. Hair should feel moisturised afterwards but not greasy.

Cover up…

Use a hat or scarf to protect your head when you’re out in the sun. This will provide extra UV protection and will help your scalp to retain moisture. A hat will also protect colour-treated hair.

Regular trims…

Sometimes hair can get so dry and damaged in the summer months only scissors will help. If you’re trying to grow out your hair I would recommend coming in to the salon and just lightly trimming the hair after a blow dry. Lightly trimming the ends will create strength. Every three weeks may seem quite often but it means you don’t have to cut off long split ends.

Deep conditioning…

Use coconut oil or Shea butter (not too much as can be quite heavy) to smooth, de-frizz and moisturise your hair after washing. Try a natural deep conditioning treatment once a week to get that extra bit of moisture into your hair.

Suncreen...

It's important to protect your scalp in the summer. Hair acts as a barrier to the sun and protects the scalp but some widening partings might need some sunscreen application. An effective way to protect the scalp is to saturate a cotton bud with a high factor sunscreen and apply it directly to the parting. Reapply every couple of hours. This will give protection but will not cause the hair to be greasy looking at the roots.

Mask up before the gym…

Apply a moisturising mask or oil before a workout, pull back in to a ponytail. After your work out put on a plastic cap and sit in the steam room for beautifully conditioned hair.
