Embracing the winter

Embracing the winter

The nights draw in early and there’s a bitter chill in the air. When you wake up it’s dark and when you go home it’s dark. It’s enough to make you want to hibernate until those first green leaves start to reappear and birds start to sing again. It's important that we don't go into hibernation mode during winter, however tempting. Getting outside is key to our winter wellness.

We need at least 30 minutes of sunlight a day in winter to keep our Vitamin D levels high enough to combat tiredness and depression. A lack of Vitamin D can also sleep problems and lowers our immune system.

Many of us don’t get enough daylight through this time of year. Keeping an active connection to the wider, natural world around you in winter months is key.

One option is to jet off somewhere with sunnier climates – this will give you a boost of energy and break up the long winter months…or, you could embrace winter’s cold beauty here at home instead. When you’re feeling cooped up or have spent all week in the office, plan a long weekend country walk – breathing in the fresh air will work wonders.

There are also things you can do during the working week to make you feel uplifted. Wrap up warm and take a brisk 30-minute walk on your lunch break – it’s a great pick-me-up and much-needed break from the screen, it will leave you feeling re-energised. Make your lunch break all about mindful time outdoors. Find interesting routes to explore, even if you're in the city. Try walking fast enough to get some colour in your cheeks and take notice how the season is changing each day around you.

If you can get to a local park or a corner of the country side – be mindful of the quieter beauty of winter – bare branches and frosted leaves. And don’t forget to keep your fitness levels up. Yoga, pilates or swimming will boost your serotonin levels to keep you fit and fight off those winter colds.

Why not brave the elements and get outdoors for exercise? Head out for a winter run and return home calmer, happier and refreshed.

Keep your chin up, get busy outdoors – spring will be here in no time.
